“The blurring of the distinction between artistic materials and object world was important because it forced a reassessment of the status of objects. In essence, the question these artists asked was ‘what is an object?’ … An object, in a material sense, is not only something that has body, mass and form, it may be - like rock, dirt and other ‘dead’ or formless matter - a primary substance that is used in the making of familiar objects of use; as sand, for example, is used in the making of glass, or wood pulp in the creation of paper products … a transformation occurs when the used up remnants of an industrial society that had to continually discard its useless junk impel the creation of new artistic visions that utilised stuff condemned to a category of worthlessness.”
